Space4Women A KSEC2024
Pre-Event

DATE: Friday, June 14th 2024 VENUE: Radisson Blu Hotel, Upperhill | Nairobi

Background

Kenya is a space faring nation, and its space sector has experienced significant growth and development in recent decades, particularly with the establishment of the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) in 2017. KSA is a State Corporation established with the mandate to promote, coordinate, and regulate space-related activities in the country. The Agency seeks to nurture the growth of Kenya’s domestic space sector, focusing on the following:

  • Enhanced utilization of space services, technologies and space-derived data across the public sector for decision support, planning and predictive analytics;
  • Development of national space capability;
  • Nurturing the growth of the domestic space sector and ecosystem; and
  • Awareness creation and sensitization on the utility of exploration and exploitation of space capabilities in national socioeconomic development.

To enhance awareness, the Agency hosts a biennial Kenya Space Expo and Conference (KSEC). Accordingly, the Agency will be convening 2nd edition KSEC 2024 from 18 to 20 June 2024 at the Edge Convention Centre, Nairobi. The Conference, themed "Space Technologies for Societal Benefits" will provide a forum for conversations on and showcasing the use of space technologies and related applications to address societal challenges and in support of national socioeconomic development. The event aims to bring together industry, government representatives, policy makers, academia, representatives of international organizations, young professionals and the public.

As a lead up to KSEC 2024, the Agency will host Space4Women as a Pre-Event at Radisson Blu Hotel, Upperhilll on 14 June 2024. This will also serve as a precursor to the United Nation Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Space4Women Expert Meeting that will be held in Kenya from 27-29 November 2024.

Space4Women is a capacity building initiative of UNOOSA that is jointly co-hosted with Space Agencies of space fairing nations aimed at promoting women’s empowerment in the space sector. The previous 4 Expert Meeting events were held in USA (2017), United Arab Emirates (2021), Republic of Korea (2022) and Canada (2023).

According to the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), women account for only 20% – 22% of the space sector workers and 28.8% of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) researchers globally. Women's empowerment is fundamental to achieving Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The lack of female representation in STEM hinders progress towards achievement of SDGs 4 -Quality Education, targets 4.5 (eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education); SDG 5 - Gender Equality, target 5.5 (Ensuring women's full participation and leadership opportunities); SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth, target 8.5 (Achieving equal work for equal pay) and SDG 10 -Reduced Inequality. Women in Space and STEM sector encounter obstacles such as lack of mentorship and support network as well as limited knowledge of the existing career opportunities. Addressing gender inequality in STEM and particularly the space sector is vital for fostering inclusion, equity and tapping into the diverse human potential for the development and application of space science and technologies for socio-economic benefit. The Kenya Space Agency has a duty to promote access to Space and Earth based research facilities, infrastructure and information to assist in bridging the equality divide and connecting marginalized groups (including women) to services, education and work opportunities provided by space technologies. As envisaged in the KSA Strategic Plan 2023-2027, Kenya has a unique opportunity to promote and advance gender equality and women empowerment in the space sector as it works towards establishing a viable indigenous industry by 2030.
