- Alex Fortescue has 25 years of business development experience in earth observation in Africa. He has a Master of Science cum laude focussed on remote sensing in the conservation sector and both commercial and public sector experience.
- He spent 10 years as the Earth Observation manager at the precursor to the South African Space Agency (SANSA) then the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Satellite Applications Centre (SAC) where he developed use cases in the government and Defense sectors. During his tenure there, He was seconded to the South African Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) to manage South Africa's chairing of the Committee of Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) and lead South Africa's response to the objectives set out by the Group on Earth Observation (GEO). He was also seconded to the DSI to assist South Africa's bid to host the now operational multi-billion-dollar Square Kilometre Array Space Telescope and assisted the Department of Trade and Industry to develop the South African National Space Policy which culminated in the birth of SANSA.
- His commercial sector experience includes pioneering the airborne hyperspectral imaging market in Africa during his tenure at Southern Mapping Company – now Woolpert Africa and for the last 10 years - heading up Africa for Maxar Technologies.
